ATROCITY is a podcast that offers listeners who love true crime stories a place to hear detailed summaries of history’s most horrendous acts. I will recount the incidents from front to back, including the lead-up, the crime itself, trial information, and in some cases the aftermath. These narratives will emphasize the psychology behind criminal behaviors, and will include archival audio of interviews, news footage, and other sources where possible. I want to offer the audience the deep-dive into stories that I enjoy myself; there are already a number of fantastic true crime podcasts out there, but I intend offer something a little different by carefully choosing cases that are predisposed to long narratives styles. While these stories may feature crimes beyond heinous, I aim to strike a balance between emotive, poignant storytelling and respect for the victims and their families. It will not be a spectacle of violence for the sake of entertainment, but rather a way to remember the victims, analyze the circumstances, and help others to identify behavior and situations before they become deadly.
ATROCITY is also, in many ways, a love letter to the true crime podcasts and documentaries that have helped to conceived a whole genre entertainment. The long-form audio format also allows listeners to become engrossed in a story; it allows creators to lay a foundation of detailed information and provides an opportunity to utilize all the time necessary for truly developing a narrative. As a true crime “addict” who became enraptured with this method, I always knew that some day I would use my love of audio production to tell stories; now, a format exists that accentuates the qualities of these unpredictable tales.
